Plant Watering Calculator

Pick your plant and conditions to get a personalized watering interval, built on the same species data as our care guides.

How the calculator works

Every species has a baseline rhythm — a monstera wants a real dry-down between drinks while a Boston fern never wants to dry out completely. The calculator starts from that baseline (the same growing-season range printed on each of our plant care guides) and adjusts it for the four conditions that change how fast soil actually dries.

Bright light and small or terracotta pots dry soil faster, so the interval shortens. Low light, big pots, and the low-growth winter months slow everything down, so the interval stretches — winter alone can add half again as much time or more between waterings. The result is a range, not a rule: always confirm the topsoil is dry before you water, whatever the calendar says.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a watering calculator?

It's a strong starting range, not a guarantee. Humidity, root health, and soil mix all shift the real interval, which is why the result should always be confirmed with a quick soil check before watering.

Why does the season change how often I water?

Most houseplants slow their growth in fall and winter, using far less water while cooler, dimmer conditions dry the soil more slowly. The same plant can need water half as often in January as in July.

Can a planter handle this automatically?

Yes — a sensor-driven planter measures the soil instead of estimating it. LeafyPod identifies the species and waters on a schedule tuned to the actual moisture reading, which is the calculator's logic taken to its conclusion.
